I was a creative child, but somewhere along the path to adulthood, the notion that being an artist\u00a0<\/span>wasn\u2019t \u201ca real job\u201d became engrained in my psyche. Guidance counselors, academic advisors, bitter\u00a0<\/span>people punching a clock and spending the better part of their life surrounded by beige walls. All of them\u00a0<\/span>telling me the same thing: \u201cYou need a realistic career goal.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/div>\n
From a young age, many of us are taught that straying from the traditional course is risky, and therefore\u00a0<\/span>unwise. If we don\u2019t follow the beaten path, how will we make a living? What will become of us?<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Beware: Missed Opportunities Ahead<\/span><\/strong>
\nThe truth is, success doesn\u2019t come with a guarantee\u2014whether you major in finance or study ceramics.\u00a0<\/span>Nothing in life is guaranteed.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

What you can be sure of, though, is that if you never take a risk, you will never know what opportunities\u00a0<\/span>you missed out on. Do you want to spend the rest of your life wondering\u00a0<\/span>what could\u2019ve been<\/span>?<\/span><\/div>\n

We are defined by the choices we make, and if you choose not to put yourself out there and test the\u00a0<\/span>creative waters, you\u2019ve already determined your path. Those Who Take Risks Leave Legacies<\/span><\/strong>
\nPicasso is essentially a household name. Even people who don\u2019t dabble in the arts can identify Picasso\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>work. But did you know that Picasso was extraordinarily skilled at painting in the classical realism style?\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s true! Before Picasso began experimenting with abstract work, he painted uber realistic pieces. His\u00a0<\/span>later work was considered radical, and it\u2019s also what ultimately made him one of the world\u2019s most\u00a0<\/span>famous artists. Had he not stepped outside of the box, so to speak, would he still hold that title?<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Feel how you may about comedian Amy Schumer, she\u2019s carved out an important spot in the comedy\u00a0<\/span>landscape for women. Not only did she make the coveted Forbes\u2019 Top 10 highest paid comedians list,\u00a0<\/span>she\u2019s the\u00a0<\/span>only female<\/span>\u00a0to appear there. Schumer gets a lot of backlash for her particularly raunchy brand\u00a0<\/span>of comedy, but it was clearly a risk worth taking. \u00a0<\/span>
\nI could go on forever listing people who will go down in history because of they\u2019ve taken the road less\u00a0<\/span>traveled. Whether you look at J.K. Rowling or Malala Yousafzai, it\u2019s clear that if you want to leave a\u00a0<\/span>legacy, you can\u2019t play it safe.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Start Small, Win Big<\/span><\/strong>
\nSo you\u2019re convinced and ready to start coloring outside of the lines…carefully. Don\u2019t worry, you don\u2019t<\/span>need to throw caution completely to the wind. Here are a few things you can do to start taking more<\/span>risks and reaping some major benefits:<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
1. Take baby steps.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n
If, for example, you\u2019re afraid to invest any money in your creative ventures, start\u00a0<\/span>with a small investment and see what kind of returns you get. You don\u2019t have to go all in and spend<\/span>$10K on coaching or fancy equipment. Find a reasonable amount that fits your budget and invest\u00a0<\/span>wisely\u2014you just might be amazed at how quickly it pays off!<\/span><\/div>\n

2. Make calculated decisions.<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
Perhaps you\u2019re one of those people who has a lot of naysayers in your life\u00a0<\/span>and they\u2019re constantly reminding you about the dangers of pursuing your creative passions and striking\u00a0<\/span>out on your own. Start with a side hustle and prove to yourself (and them) it\u2019s possible. When you reach\u00a0<\/span>a point that you\u2019re no longer able to keep moonlighting, look at all your options, weigh the pros and\u00a0<\/span>cons of each, and be realistic. Who knows? Maybe you\u2019ll inspire others to finally pursue their dreams.<\/span><\/div>\n

3. Find like-minded people.<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
Finally, one of the best things you can do to calm your gambling nerves is to\u00a0<\/span>surround yourself with other creatives and entrepreneurs. Why? Because chances are they can relate\u2014<\/span>they\u2019ve been where you are. Sharing your apprehensions with someone who has gone through the same\u00a0<\/span>thing is mega valuable. They can share their experiences, provide guidance, and ease your mind. Maybe\u00a0<\/span>what you think is a big risk isn\u2019t that risky after all.<\/span><\/div>\n
