Traffic is down everywhere, and competition is up. But together we can organically increase our traffic through search engine optimization.<\/p>\n<p>And the thing that is the foundation of all other SEO work? Keywords! They have the power to make or break your entire strategy.<\/p>\n<p>If you select keywords that few people search for, ranking at #1 won&#8217;t have an effect on traffic or sales. But if you select keywords that everyone is looking for and try to compete with big corporations, you could have the best content yet no one will find it. Selecting keywords is arguably <strong>the most important SEO work<\/strong> you will do.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What do we mean by \u201ckeywords\u201d?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Keywords, in the SEO world, are the terms for which we want to show up in search engines. These could be one-word keywords, two-word keywords, or complete phrases, but to simplify things, we&#8217;re going to stick to one term: <strong>Keywords.<\/strong> (Long-tail keywords\u201d are often espoused in SEO talk. Long-tail keywords are simply phrases. Y&#8217;all, seriously\u2014why can&#8217;t you just call them phrases?)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Step 1: Discovering your current keywords<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>First, we want to find out what keywords you are already ranking highly for. If you&#8217;re a new blogger\/webmaster, it is not uncommon to have very few of these. Don&#8217;t be discouraged, because we&#8217;re going to change that.<\/p>\n<h4>1. Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/explorer\">https:\/\/moz.com\/explorer<\/a>. (You can only use 10 queries per month for free.)<\/h4>\n<h4>2. Select &#8220;Root Domain&#8221; from the drop down.<\/h4>\n<h4>3. Enter your domain name, exactly as it is in Google Search Console or Analytics\u2014if you use the \u201cwww\u201d on your site, include it here.<\/h4>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/honeybook\/images\/v1607548989\/Untitled-2-1\/Untitled-2-1.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14235\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14235 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Untitled-2-1-566x392.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"566\" height=\"392\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<h4>4. Make a note of all the words you see in the &#8220;Top Ranking Keywords&#8221; section. Also make a note of the monthly volume for each one.<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/honeybook\/images\/v1607548990\/Untitled-3-2\/Untitled-3-2.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14236\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14236 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Untitled-3-2-536x434.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"536\" height=\"434\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you look closely, you&#8217;ll notice that I show up #1 for the keyword, &#8220;Edit top navigation WordPress&#8221;. However, look at the monthly volume\u2014a whopping 0-10 people actually search that term. <em>Not Helpful!<\/em> (It&#8217;s not literally 0-10\u2014the important thing is to look at all the numbers in relation to each other to compare their search volumes. Basically, this term\u2019s volume is 500x less than \u201csamcart\u201d.)<\/li>\n<li>Another optional tool: <a href=\"https:\/\/neilpatel.com\/seo-analyzer\/\">https:\/\/neilpatel.com\/seo-analyzer\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve seen whether you\u2019re ranking near the top for <em>relevant <\/em>keywords, let&#8217;s find out which keywords are actually sending the <em>most traffic <\/em>to your blog.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a01. Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehoth.com\/search-engine-rankings\">https:\/\/www.thehoth.com\/search-engine-rankings<\/a> and enter your domain name.<\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a02. Patiently wait for the page to finish thinking\u2014it takes time!<\/h4>\n<h4>3. You&#8217;ll see results like this:<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/honeybook\/images\/v1607548991\/Untitled-4-1\/Untitled-4-1.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14237\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14237 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Untitled-4-1-566x344.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"566\" height=\"344\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>4. This list shows up to 50 keywords that send the most traffic to your site.<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>If they aren&#8217;t what you had been hoping for, don&#8217;t fret\u2014we&#8217;re gonna make a plan to change them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>5.\u00a0 Make a note of the top keywords (that you like) and the &#8220;volume&#8221; and &#8220;results&#8221; columns. These will come in handy later.<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Even if those keywords are perfect, don&#8217;t skip the research part\u2014it will still apply to all new content that you write.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At this point, you know the keywords that you are already ranking for. You know roughly how many visitors they send to your blog. And you should be getting an idea of whether or not you need to switch things up!<\/p>\n<p>Now we can move on to the fun part: let&#8217;s find the keywords that are going to drive traffic and bring raving fans and customers to your website.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Step 2: Selecting the most effective keywords<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s time to find the best variations of the keywords you\u2019re considering. I love this part because if you do it right, you&#8217;ll see <em>immediate <\/em>results.<\/p>\n<h4>1. Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/kwfinder.com\/\"><strong>https:\/\/kwfinder.com\/<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/honeybook\/images\/v1607548992\/Untitled-5-1\/Untitled-5-1.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14238\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14238 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Untitled-5-1-566x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"566\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>2. Enter the most common keywords in your niche. Start broad and then narrow in as you work through this. Select the country where most of your audience is and select your target language.<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>In this example, I&#8217;m an event photographer working in and around Atlanta. So I entered &#8220;photographer in Atlanta&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>3. Evaluate the results. Look for keywords that have KD (Keyword Difficulty) scores with a \u201cgreen\u201d result <em>and<\/em> show a good number of visitors.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/honeybook\/images\/v1607548992\/Untitled-6\/Untitled-6.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14239\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14239 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Untitled-6-566x362.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"566\" height=\"362\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now you have a good idea of which keywords you should use for optimizing, and which ones aren&#8217;t worth aiming for.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you had a young blog and were starting out, I would go with &#8220;Photographer in Atlanta&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>If you were seasoned and had incoming links to your site, and your domain is a few years old (with active updating), I would go for a keyword with higher volume of searches.<\/li>\n<li>You can perform five searches for free each day with this tool.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other Tools for <strong><em>finding your keywords.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/neilpatel.com\/ubersuggest\/\">https:\/\/neilpatel.com\/ubersuggest\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/explorer\">https:\/\/moz.com\/explorer<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/keywords\">https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/keywords<\/a> (provides accurate search volume but no competition info)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot that goes into optimization of your pages, domain, and social media networks\u2014it&#8217;s never boring in the SEO world!
