People&#8217;s attention spans are\nshort. So today I\u2019m sharing with you my top seven\ntips for starting out with SEO. Because getting started is half the battle, am\nI right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Here are my top seven ways to crack the secret to great SEO for your small business:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Know who you\u2019re speaking to with your small business<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to work out exactly who you want to sell\nto. It may sound good to say &#8220;millennials who live in X state&#8221;, but\nyou have to be much more specific. Ask yourself questions like: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What do they do for a job? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which towns\/cities do they live in?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What do they do in their spare time?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What do they enjoy in life?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What do they struggle with when finding your\nproduct?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re a wedding supplier, you could be more\nspecific in this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What kind of wedding will they have? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which kind of venues do they love?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s their style?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Give your target clients a personality. Think about\nall the clients you have loved working with and create that personality based\non them. By targeting very specifically, you\u2019ll be able to create content that\nwill speak to your dream clients\u2014such as projects you\u2019ve worked on that are similar\nto their ideal weddings, useful information about venues they love, or top tips\non the type of wedding they want\u2014and use language that they will relate to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Feel the need\u2014the need for web speed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your website needs to\nload quickly. Think about when you\u2019re browsing the web, whether it\u2019s on your\nphone or on your laptop. You get impatient when waiting for websites to load, you\u2019re\nalready thinking about the next thing on your to-do list, and you click away to\nanother tab and open another option. Now think about your potential clients\ndoing this\u2014isn\u2019t it horrifying to think that your website might be the one\nthey\u2019re clicking away from? That\u2019s why you need to have a fast-loading website.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To test your site, you\ncan use Google\u2019s free tool here: <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/speed\/pagespeed\/insights\/\">https:\/\/developers.google.com\/speed\/pagespeed\/insights\/<\/a> and follow the guidelines they offer on to how to improve your\nsite speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Words, words, words<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In order for search engines to understand the purpose\nof your website and see you as someone to be trusted, you need to put certain\nwords and phrases in certain places. But can you just use any old phrase?\nCertainly not. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take the example of a New York wedding photographer.\nWords like \u201cNew York\u201d, \u201cwedding\u201d, and \u201cphotographer\u201d are too broad on their\nown, which is why phrases are key. By bringing in your knowledge of your target\naudience, you will also be able to brainstorm keyword options by thinking about\nthe venues, towns, or areas that they might be interested in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. What are you selling, and how are you selling it?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Using our example of a New York wedding\nphotographer, you&#8217;re not competing against all other wedding photographers in\nthe surrounding areas, because you don\u2019t all have the same target client. When you\nunderstand exactly what you&#8217;re selling and how it differs from your competitors,\nthis will inform the text you use on your website, the kind of images you use,\nand the useful content you create. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Are you a small business? You need to blog, for SEO sake.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to have a blog on your website. Lots of\npeople get scared about putting themselves out there, but I promise you this is\nthe easiest way to attract traffic to your site. It&#8217;s also cost-effective\nbecause you&#8217;re doing it yourself! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How will you know what to write about? Well, which\nquestions do your clients ask you about? Which questions do you see cropping up\ntime and time again in Facebook groups or from colleagues? How can you help?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, you can use images from your own portfolio\neach time you post (and if you don&#8217;t have enough images, consider booking a photographer\nto create more images.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong> 6. Build links back to your website<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to get links back to your site in order to\nattract traffic. Register with Google Maps to get yourself literally on the\nmap. Look up business directories in your county and get yourself registered\nthere. You should also look up directory sites in your niche and register on\nthose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong> 7. Tell Google you exist<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the point of putting in all this effort if\nsearch engines don\u2019t know you exist? You can\u2019t just sit around hoping they\u2019ll\nnotice you\u2014you need to march in and tell Google you\u2019re here by submitting your\nsite. Then, install Google Analytics on your site to track what\u2019s working. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So there you have it! Phew! You made it.
