Marketing copy should do the heavy lifting for your business when you walk away from it\u2014you\u2019re probably like me and HATE the whole \u201csip mai-tais and work from the beach with your laptop\u201d skeezy thing and \u201cyour email list is like an ATM!\u201d concept (ew.), but we DO need our businesses to make money while we rest.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Life happens, babies happen, mental health happens\u2014some days, weeks, or even months, we need to (rightly) rest.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And that\u2019s why I love email marketing: it\u2019s the #1 generator of revenue for my business, and my clients like Jenna Kutcher, Julie Solomon, Beth Kirby, and more\u2014it\u2019s worth spending time on.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In this read, I\u2019m assuming you KNOW you need to have an email list (after all, you\u2019re reading this RTS guide) &#8230;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u2026 and I want to give you 3 ways to uplevel what you\u2019ve got going.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Use a go-to newsletter copywriting formula.<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It\u2019s going to be a lot easier to see a spike in your click-through-rates with this tip, if you\u2019ve never tried it. One old-school copywriting formula I\u2019ve put to work myself and clients is \u201cPASOP\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&#8230; a gussied up version of problem-agitation-solution.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Start with the end in mind: you want to drive to your latest blog, podcast, or video. Back up a bit and think of the problem your audience would be faced with before that. Talk about it\u2014show them you know what it\u2019s like, and \u2026<\/li>\r\n<li>\u2026 agitate a little.<\/li>\r\n<li>Then, give a solution , maybe it\u2019s 3 tips, or an easy action item or learning that they can implement immediately.<\/li>\r\n<li>But you know what they say, mo\u2019 money mo\u2019 problems, so now, I want you to explain this new opportunity they have. Maybe after they wanted to know how to encourage their nervous fiance before kissing in front of a complete stranger photographer for engagement photos, they need to know what to wear. Maybe after they know the psychology behind colors, they\u2019re ready for a designer to lead them through picking brand colors for themselves.<\/li>\r\n<li>And this is the NEW problem , which you can solve with a call to action button to your latest blog post that answers it. This formula helps you stay on task, not go on a tangent.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Mine AOL.com for preview copy text.<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Ninja trick here, but go with me. When you open your email app on your phone, you know how you see a little blurb about the email that isn\u2019t necessarily the body copy of the email?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">That\u2019s called preview copy.<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Like your subject line (sometimes the only thing a subscriber reads in your email\u2014make it GOOD!), this little copy snippet is make-it-or-break it. These two things can make someone open the email, or click delete.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>My tip? Get hints from AOL.com. Kinda weird, but look at how AOL writers describe what happens after the jump. Those snippets can be madlibbed for what you\u2019re trying to drive to in your email.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Here\u2019s an example. These hyperlinks from AOL.com could be great preview copy in your emails:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20224\" src=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screen_Shot_2019-06-24_at_10.08.47_AM-1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cNever would have expected to see this!!\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20223\" src=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screen_Shot_2019-06-24_at_10.09.13_AM-1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cThese things? They\u2019re NOT cool.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Give that hack a whirl for endless inspiration when you\u2019re drafting your own email newsletter preview copy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Read every email out loud\u2014always.<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>I recently had a client that didn\u2019t want to start sentences with \u201cand\u201d or \u201cbut,\u201d because she wanted to stay professional. If you\u2019ve watched any of my YouTubes, you\u2019ve heard me say it: typing like you talk will help you sound less robotic.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Even famous copywriters and authors agree: when it comes to sales copy, grammar rules don\u2019t always apply. You don\u2019t say \u201cin which palace does the queen of England live\u201d \u2026 you say \u201cwhat palace does the queen of England live in?\u2019 That\u2019s ending a sentence with a preposition, and it\u2019s how we *actually* talk.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Start some sentences with a conjunction.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Have sentences stand on their own, without any 10th-grade-English-teacher-approved 4-sentence paragraph style in action.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Line breaking often gives people the opportunity to feel like they\u2019re working down the page \u2026 you\u2019ll know you need to break a line when you come up and take a breath when you\u2019re reading aloud.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Reading aloud editing can cover a myriad of woes before you hit send. Even when I\u2019m working on campaigns for launches that have pulled in way more than $500k, guess what I still do before I turn copy over to my clients? I print out the emails, and I read them aloud.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Writing about email marketing as a conversion copywriter and funnel strategist is like fitting an ocean in a teacup, but if you struggle with confidence in writing newsletters for your email subscribers, I hope these tips help you write better newsletters!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Having a strong email content strategy definitely can help you work from a place of rest, not hustle\u2014as long as you have a sustainable, effective email marketing plan in place.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong><em>Ready to have email marketing do the heavy lifting for you?
