{"id":20612,"date":"2019-10-31T08:00:47","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T12:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/honeybook.site.strattic.io\/?p=20612"},"modified":"2022-07-13T13:12:20","modified_gmt":"2022-07-13T20:12:20","slug":"ebb-and-flow-making-the-most-out-of-the-slow-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hbb.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/ebb-and-flow-making-the-most-out-of-the-slow-times","title":{"rendered":"Ebb and Flow: Making the Most Out of the Slow Times"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21538\" src=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ben-kolde-6lzIdGOoqfg-unsplash-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>\r\n<figcaption>Photo by Ben Kolde on Unsplash<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Often we feel like the work is never-ending.\u00a0 We\u2019re stuck in overdrive, working hard to complete that project by the deadline.\u00a0 Or we\u2019ve got multiple projects all at different stages and we\u2019re moving as fast as we can.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t seem like it will ever let up.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>But in most workplaces, there also comes a time when the workload begins to ebb a bit and we can take a deep breath and pull our heads above water, even if just for a bit.<\/strong>\u00a0 And when that happens, it can be hard to know what to do with ourselves.\u00a0 You\u2019re so used to go-go-go, that you need to take a beat to figure out what to do with yourself when you <em>aren\u2019t<\/em> fighting fires.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The holiday season that is upon us right now is often one of these slower periods.\u00a0 People are out of town, annual reviews are taking place, not a lot of deals are being made.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Often I find that we look back at the slower periods (from the middle of a busy period, no doubt) and feel that we didn\u2019t exactly take advantage of that time.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>I think most of us truly want to be productive, even when the pressure is off.<\/strong>\u00a0 So, here are some ways that you can make the most out of the slower times, to set yourself up for success during the busier times:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Purge\/Declutter<\/em><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Clear Off Your Desk &#8211;<\/strong> Put everything in its place. Put that extra stapler back in the supply closet where it belongs. Straighten, neaten, tidy and toss.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Remove Paper<\/strong> &#8211; Get rid of all that paper that\u2019s been accumulating. File, scan and\/or shred.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Unsubscribe<\/strong> from all those marketing emails that are just cluttering up your inbox and not providing you with any value. (Try <u><a href=\"https:\/\/unroll.me\/\">me<\/a><\/u> to streamline the process.)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Organize<\/em><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Digitize! <\/strong>&#8211; Have you still got a lot of paper hanging around? It\u2019s never been easier to digitize. Most printers have a scanner.\u00a0 If you have an Android phone you can scan to PDF directly from the Google Drive app.\u00a0 If you\u2019re on iOS there are plenty of great scanning apps (<u><a href=\"https:\/\/scanbot.io\/en\/index.html\">Scanbot<\/a><\/u> or <u><a href=\"https:\/\/readdle.com\/scannerpro\">Scanner Pro<\/a><\/u> are both are highly rated and connect with Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.)<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Organize Digital Files<\/strong> &#8211; Is your desktop a mess of document icons? Do you have a folder structure that has a HUGE \u201cmisc.\u201d folder? \u00a0Do you not have a folder structure at all?\u00a0 Clean up (or create) your folder structure and give those docs an (easily findable) home. (I know, I know, you can just search your docs.\u00a0 But if you\u2019re anything like me, you sometimes find that it\u2019s quicker to go right to the place you know something will be than to try to remember what it was called, or what key words to search.)<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Organize Email<\/strong> &#8211; Are your labels, tags, and\/or folders working for you? Take some time to clean them up. Automate labeling of emails by setting up filters and auto-applying labels.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Prepare For Your Performance Review<\/strong> &#8211; Create an email label\/tag called \u201cperformance\u201d so that you can tag anything you want to include in your annual self-review (kudos you receive from others, emails you send yourself to remember your accomplishments, etc.). Doing so will make next year\u2019s review process a breeze.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Tackle the Backlog<\/em><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Get to Inbox 0<\/strong> &#8211; It\u2019s elusive, I know. It can feel like an overwhelming feat. But you can do it.\u00a0 There\u2019s no better time than a slow period at work to make it happen.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Schedule a Productivity Power Hour (or Day)<\/strong> &#8211; We\u2019ve all got tasks on our list that just aren\u2019t as important as the rest of our work. And those things can start to pile up. Schedule an hour, or a day, and just knock them all of your list.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Reflect<\/em><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3><strong>Reflect on the Busy Period You Just Emerged From<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>What practices or habits made the busy time feel even more overwhelming?<\/li>\r\n<li>What systems seemed rather inefficient?<\/li>\r\n<li>On your most stressful days, what was going on?<\/li>\r\n<li>Take the time to really think back and figure out what you can do now to help yourself later. Maybe you need to improve communication with a certain team or coworker.\u00a0 Maybe your information\/resources weren\u2019t always up to date.\u00a0 Reflect on the challenges so that you can work on the solutions.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Set Goals\/Priorities<\/em><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s Next? <\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>It\u2019s hard to think about the future when we are treading water in the present.\u00a0 <strong>But now you\u2019ve got a little room to think.\u00a0 So think.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>What do you want to do, learn or become over the next several months or year? Do a little research to figure out the next steps and make an action plan.\u00a0\u00a0 Figure out what you need to do each day or week to make your goal a reality.<\/li>\r\n<li>A big decision on the horizon? Start a list of pros and cons.\u00a0 Put your thoughts to paper.\u00a0 Start narrowing down the options and pick a direction.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Relax<\/em><\/h2>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>I know I said I was going to give you tips about how to be productive in the slow times, so maybe you\u2019re thinking \u201cwhat is she talking about?\u201d.\u00a0 But, taking breaks has been proven to help us improve both our creativity and productivity.\u00a0 In fact, I wrote a whole blog post about it that I won\u2019t rehash, but you are welcome to read it <u class=\"remove-format\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexishaselberger.com\/news-notes\/2018\/7\/12\/on-not-working-sometimes\">here<\/a><\/u>.\u00a0 Bask a little bit in the slowness.\u00a0 <strong>Take a deep breath, or a walk, because you know the busy times are right around the corner.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><em>Ready to finally master time management, ditch the overwhelm, and increase your productivity in life and business?
