It\u2019s December again? How did this happen?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t know about you, but I\u2019m having so much fun <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/7-best-reasons-work-for-yourself\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working for myself<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the time is just flying by.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re like most freelancers and solopreneurs, you\u2019re probably working hard to cram in any last-minute projects before the December holidays.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But rushing through December just to finally check out for the last week and hold your breath that nothing explodes is, well, not necessarily the best way to end the year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve been there. It\u2019s not great.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, consider a few year-end tasks that\u2014if you can make time for them\u2014will pay off massively next year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few ideas that have paid off in big ways for my own business in the past:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Perform a Year-End Review (or more than one)<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most powerful things you can do for yourself is perform a year-end review (or more than one if you want).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have to go so far as to take a week off work, leave your phone at home, and retreat to the mountains like some entrepreneurs do.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, follow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chrisguillebeau.com\/how-to-conduct-your-own-annual-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the advice of Chris Guillebeau<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (one of my favorite authors and business thinkers):<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo begin the process,\u201d he explains, \u201cI ask myself two questions and try to come up with at least 6-8 answers to each: What went well this year? What did not go well this year?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your year-end review can focus on a number of different elements of your business including:<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revenue goals and how actual revenue measured up<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other growth metrics and positive or negative ways you impacted them<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your own personal satisfaction and happiness with your business<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fizzle.co\/sparkline\/end-year-review-planning-process-every-small-business-online-entrepreneur-follow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perform an end-of-year review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in whatever way you get most excited about, but the ultimate goal is to celebrate the successes you\u2019ve had this year (you deserve it) and make strategic plans to improve where you can next year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s more info on officially setting goals (of course, you didn\u2019t think I could write this article without mentioning goals, did you?) later on in this article.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Get super organized (digitally and in your office)<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The end of the year, while it may prove to be a bit hectic, is the best time to get yourself and your business super-organized for the new year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a home office, take a half-day away from the computer and de-clutter any old files, or anything else that makes your space feel stale and unwelcoming.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now\u2019s the time to convert your office from a drab room full of chaos to a place you\u2019re excited to come to every morning to start your day.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Think through a plan-of-attack for next year<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you noticed that many of us finally get around to making plans for the new year somewhere around mid-January?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well,<\/span> guess what, if you wait until January 15 to finalize your plan of attack for the new year, you\u2019re already 5% into the year: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">time you could have used to make progress on your plan instead.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In place of January plans, take time in December to make a plan of attack to improve elements of your business next year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re still only taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/millo.co\/freelance-writing-jobs-for-beginners\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beginner freelance jobs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, maybe it\u2019s time to charge more and level up your freelance business.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re still only freelancing on the side, maybe next year is the time you finally go all-in.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or maybe you decide to treat your business more seriously by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/business-process-automation-examples\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">automating and outsourcing your time-sucking tasks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the help of a great <a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/workflows\">client workflow automation software<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever you decide, visualizing next year&#8217;s plan-of-attack starting in December will help you finish out the year with energy and hit the ground running in January (instead of with a mild holiday hangover and a blank sheet of paper).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Make any write-off-able purchases<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excuse me for just a moment while I bore you with some basic accounting knowledge (I\u2019ll keep it light).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a business owner, you have a right to \u201cwrite off\u201d certain expenses you incur in the process of doing business.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a photographer who purchased a new camera this year, you can \u201cwrite off\u201d a portion of that expense which means you won\u2019t have to pay as many taxes on the revenue you spent on the camera.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you\u2019re in the 25% tax bracket, a $100 deduction effectively saves you $25 on taxes. By buying the tools your business needs before the year\u2019s over, you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/millo.co\/top-tax-deductions-creative-entrepreneurs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reap all the benefits now and pay less taxes later<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014it\u2019s a win-win.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This all means December is the last chance to get any final business write-offs taken care of for the current calendar year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are just a few ideas of big ticket items you may want to consider purchasing before the end of the year to reap the tax benefit:<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/all-in-one-business-platform\">Small business management platform<\/a> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/invites?code=MILLO&amp;utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=content&amp;utm_campaign=colossal-success-preston-lee\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HoneyBook<\/span><\/a><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Large office purchases like a desk, chair, or other furniture<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expensive equipment such as computers, cameras, or lenses<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll also want to check out our list of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/common-tax-deduction-mistakes-might-making\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common tax deductions you might be missing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, you don\u2019t actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earn<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> any money by making these purchases, you just pay less to Uncle Sam in April. So it would be unwise to make a large number of high-ticket purchases you can\u2019t afford.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The point is: If there is something you\u2019re dragging your feet on or think you might purchase in January, you might as well do it now and save yourself some tax liability.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Set habits (not goals) for the upcoming year<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aha! You knew I\u2019d get to this one eventually, right?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would be unfair to write an article about crushing it as a freelancer next year without mentioning the power of goals and habits.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But much like the plan of attack for the new year, if you wait until mid-January to make any progress on your goals, you\u2019re already almost 5% into the year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even better than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/how-to-set-killer-goals-3-steps-to-achieving-success\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">setting killer goals for your business<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you should try setting habits.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the difference?<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some psychologists have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/assets\/sites\/545\/docs\/Wendy_Wood_Research_Articles\/Habits\/Neal.Wood.Quinn.2006_Habits_a_repeat_performance.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over half of the tasks we perform each day are routine habits.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can probably think of plenty of \u201cbad\u201d habits you perform without much thought: eating too fast, clicking your pen, always apologizing, watching Netflix.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You probably have a few neutral habits that you just perform because you need to: eating breakfast, taking kids to school, showering.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But can you identify the good habits you\u2019ve worked hard to develop in yourself over the years?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that developing habits is infinitely more powerful than setting a goal for yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo matter how invested you are in your goals, taking consistent action to change your habits is difficult,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/wander-woman\/201802\/stop-making-new-goals-create-habits-instead\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explains psychologist Marcia Reynolds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThere is safety going back to old thinking and behaviors. You must take deliberate, consistent actions repeatedly over time to defy your brain if you want to achieve the results you desire.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo achieve a goal, don&#8217;t plan on taking progressive steps. You must first create new habits.\u201d<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of setting new goals in January, be determined to develop good business habits beginning January 1 (or sooner).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habits help you ultimately reach your goal. For example, if you have a goal to learn new business tactics and get advice from more seasoned entrepreneurs, you might choose to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/podcasts-for-creatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listen to more podcasts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead of just clicking on the radio when you drive to a photoshoot.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a goal to be more responsive to your most important clients, you might set a habit to review your email every morning at 10am and every afternoon at 2pm; replying to important emails within 24 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a goal of increasing revenue, you might choose to set a calendar reminder to build a habit of reviewing your finances every month.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or if your goal is to find 5 new clients every month, your habit would include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/6-cold-email-tips-i-use-to-turn-strangers-into-paying-clients\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sending cold emails<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to new potential clients twice a week.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habits are infinitely more powerful than goals because once developed, they run on autopilot to help you reach your goals more efficiently.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Thank your clients for their business this year<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the year wraps up, you may want to consider sending some sort of official \u201cthank you\u201d to your biggest or most important clients.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously, this can happen at any time, but it\u2019s a great way to wrap up the year and all the work you\u2019ve done together.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easy ways to say \u201cthank you\u201d may include anything from a simple phone call to a thoughtful card, or even more elaborate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/millo.co\/client-gifts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">client gifts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal of this activity is not only to thank them for their business in the current year but to stay top-of-mind through the holiday season so you can rekindle your working relationship in the new year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My advice is to avoid sugary treats or clich\u00e9 food baskets because often companies receive so many of these in December, they end up throwing a lot of gifts out.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, go the extra mile to determine what might be a thoughtful gift for your client.&nbsp;<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For younger, more startup-style clients, maybe a quirky gift like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B07VNKRDXJ\/ref=sspa_dk_detail_4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this toy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that turns any conference room table into a ping pong table.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a classier choice, companies like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/greetabl.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greetabl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allow you to customize every aspect of your client gifts. You choose the box print that the gift is packaged in and the gift itself. Then, you can write your own message and attach photos to the inside of the box.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more memorable your client gift, the farther this kind action will take you in the new year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Take a break, unplug, and recharge<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally, I only had 6 items on my list of year-end tasks that will set your freelancing up for success next year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as I wrote, I realized I was leaving out one of the most important tasks there is. One that I make sure to incorporate every year-end.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relaxing.<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may not seem like something you should do if you\u2019re running your own business, but unplugging from the day-to-day work tasks you\u2019ve dealt with all year can be extremely refreshing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During your time off, you may find your mind opening up to new business ideas that you previously hadn\u2019t made time for.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if not, that\u2019s fine too. Completely emptying out your over-stressed entrepreneurial brain is good sometimes (just like cleaning out that office).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So whether you\u2019re celebrating a particular holiday this December or not, I recommend you take some time off. It\u2019s a great time to do it, since so many other people are out of the office, too.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>You\u2019re going to crush it next year!<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s it.
