No matter what service they are providing, each creative entrepreneur seems to have one big question: <strong><em>How much should I charge?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of having a healthy money mindset in your business means you should continuously re-evaluate the amount you&#8217;re charging for your service. These <a href=\"https:\/\/amynorthardcpa.com\/is-it-time-to-raise-your-prices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">numbers should and will change<\/a> as your business and experience grows. Keep in mind that <a href=\"https:\/\/amynorthardcpa.com\/you-determine-your-worth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">what you and your service are worth<\/a>, in terms of money, should grow right along with your business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the amount to charge can vary widely across industries, I\u2019m going to teach you how to set a base price so you know your business will be profitable. This will also ensure that you are comfortable when providing quotes and <a href=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/online-invoices\">online invoices<\/a> to potential clients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below you will find 6 easy steps you need to follow in order to properly price your services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Amy-Northard-CPA-Headshot-5-1300x867.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22680\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 1: Know Your Profit Goal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First things first, it\u2019s important to know how much money you need to bring in each month in order to be profitable. You should also have a good handle on your <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/amynorthardcpa.com\/6-steps-to-calculate-how-much-money-your-business-needs-to-profit\/\" target=\"_blank\">breakeven goal<\/a> and constantly have these goals in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, your actual profit and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/amynorthardcpa.com\/what-is-a-cash-flow-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\">cash flow will fluctuate monthly<\/a>\u2014especially in some industries\u2014but it\u2019s important to <a href=\"https:\/\/amynorthardcpa.com\/how-to-read-an-income-statement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">make sure you have your mind on the money<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If you don\u2019t know how much you need to make each month, or if you want to make sure you have a good number in mind, check out my article explaining <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/amynorthardcpa.com\/6-steps-to-calculate-how-much-money-your-business-needs-to-profit\/\" target=\"_blank\">how to calculate your business profit<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll need your business profit number to get the best results in this exercise, so don\u2019t skip this step!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 2: Use the Worksheet to calculate how much to charge <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, snag your <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1C-Wz-4pbOVgf5lXIoQrH67LPiAMErzO4\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">free profit worksheet<\/a> so that you can fill it out as you go through the steps in this post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 3: Calculate\nYour Time<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve all heard it before: <em>\u201cTime is money!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a service-based business owner, that couldn\u2019t be truer. Your time is spread thin. Sometimes we forget how much time it actually takes to produce the final product for our clients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If\nyou\u2019re not factoring in how much time you spend with each type of client you\nserve, you might be missing the mark when you build your pricing and packages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My\nadvice is to write out your workflow for each type of client you serve and\ntrack the amount of time you spend on each task. When laid out like this, many\nof my clients are often surprised by how much time they actually spend with\neach client. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To calculate your time, think about each and every task it takes to get the job done. You should include in this calculation the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/amynorthardcpa.com\/whats-actually-included-in-cost-of-goods-sold\/\" target=\"_blank\">cost of any goods or services you sell<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some often forgotten tasks include:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Answering emails<\/li><li>Phone calls<\/li><li>Booking<\/li><li>Travel time<\/li><li>Editing<\/li><li>Ordering<\/li><li>Packaging<\/li><li>Writing Thank You&#8217;s<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On your worksheet, this final number is called your <strong><em>\u201cTime Per Client in Hours.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 4: Know Your\nClient Goal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, you\u2019ll want to set a monthly goal for how many clients or sessions you want to book per month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you aren\u2019t working with your ideal amount of clients right now, that\u2019s okay! For this exercise, use the ideal number of clients you\u2019d like to have so we can work through your pricing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To come up with this number, think about weeks or months of your business so far that have just \u201cfelt right.\u201d These are the times when you were able to handle all tasks with confidence and when you felt like your clients were getting the best of you and your service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>During those times, how many clients were you working with at once?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\nmight seem counterintuitive, but many times, my clients find more success\nworking with a smaller number of clients each month. If you properly calculate\nhow much to charge your clients, you might find this to be true for you and\nyour business as well.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 5: Find Your\nBalance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since we\u2019re talking about time-related goals, let\u2019s hit work\/life balance real quick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you know the total amount of client hours you\u2019re aiming to work per month, make sure that doesn\u2019t equal or exceed the total amount of hours you\u2019d like to work in your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If\nyou want to work a maximum of 40 hours per week, which is roughly 160 hours any\ngiven month, the amount of time you spend on client work should be less than\n160. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think\nabout all of the other non-client related tasks you have when coming up with\nthis number. Items to consider include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Answering emails<\/li><li>Marketing<\/li><li>Social media<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/amynorthardcpa.com\/dont-just-build-a-business-build-your-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Networking<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 6: Crunch\nthe Numbers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now it\u2019s time for number crunching! If you\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/amynorthardcpa.com\/6-steps-to-calculate-how-much-money-your-business-needs-to-profit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">calculated your needed monthly business profit<\/a>, then you\u2019re ready to calculate the amount of profit you need per client on your worksheet. That\u2019s it! Well done!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing what you need to profit on average per type of client gives you the power to start creating the right products, pricing, and packages to hit and exceed your goals for a profitable business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember to come back to these numbers often and adjust as needed.
