Crazy to think about now that I look back at it! When I was first welcomed into the wedding photography world, I didn\u2019t understand second shooting or why you would want another photographer to help with\u00a0the beautiful love story you are supposed to be creating for your clients. OH how naive I was!! A second shooter can be so much more than someone who captures alternative angles for you! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Being a second shooter was one of the best decisions I ever made. I&#8217;m not going to lie&#8211;I was terrified.\u00a0I was worried I wouldn\u2019t meet the expectations of the primary, or I just simply wouldn\u2019t fit into the style they contained for their weddings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Below are FOUR things you should keep in mind when\u00a0second shooting:<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>#1 What to bring:<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This may range from photographer to photographer, but the things I always bring are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">My Canon 6D (I even bring my backup camera and leave it in the car)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Battery Packs (at least 2 or more fully charged the night before)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Battery Chargers (you never know)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">External Flash + Batteries<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">SD Cards<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Variety of focal length of lenses- 50mm, 70-200mm, 24-70mm, and 100mm macro<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Wedding styling kit- stamps, lace fabric, string, tape, command hook, pearls<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Reflector Discs- I always bring these just in case but usually only use them for ring shots if the diamonds aren\u2019t evenly lit<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">A smile and a positive attitude! Being the primary at a wedding can get a little stressful if the timeline is running together. Bringing a positive attitude and a willingness\u00a0to help in any way will relieve some of the pressure she is\u00a0feeling.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3121\" src=\"https:\/\/hbbadmin.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/2016-01-12_0002.jpg\" alt=\"8 Things You Need to Know About Second Shooting | via the Rising Tide Society\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hbb.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/2016-01-12_0002.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/hbb.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/2016-01-12_0002-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hbb.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/2016-01-12_0002-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/hbb.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/2016-01-12_0002-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/hbb.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/2016-01-12_0002-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hbb.dev.reliablepenguin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/2016-01-12_0002-500x500.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>#2 What to wear:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Business professional\/business casual clothing<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Comfy shoes&#8211;your feet will thank you later.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What to wear depends on the photographer&#8217;s personal preference and how they want their business to be represented. Some photographers prefer to dress in all black so you do not stand out amongst the guests. Personally, I dress like I am just a guest at the wedding. I just happen to be the guest documenting their day \ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Steer away from neon colors as these can reflect onto your subjects and add unnecessary bright hues to your photos. Just as long as you are dressed professionally, as if the event is a job interview, you should be fine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>#3- Things to ask:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Making sure you are meeting expectations of the person who hired you can leave you feeling a little pressured. THIS IS NORMAL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The best way to feel secure with yourself and your ability to contribute to this creative day is to COMMUNICATE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s as simple as asking, \u201cAre there certain shots you would like to see captured?\u201d or \u201cWhere do you want me to stand during the ceremony?\u201d and even &#8220;Did you want me to sync my camera with the time on my phone?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">(This will make culling and editing for the photographer SO much easier. The photos will run seamlessly from when they were captured)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>#4 How to help:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There are many actions you could take that would be beneficial to the primary. Equipment fails happen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>#2 Less stress, more creativity:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Being able to step back and breath while your second is grabbing shots of the groomsmen getting ready or\u00a0the detail shots leaves time for your creative mind to soar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Most large events come with strict timelines and sometimes they don&#8217;t\u00a0run on time. Most photographers have a laundry list of the type of shots they take at weddings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When you have a second shooter able to capture a fraction of these photos, you both are given a little more time to analyze the environment you are in and capture an image that is truly special to that moment in time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>#3 Help gathering family members for family formals:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Those who have photographed weddings know that photographing family formals can be the most challenging part of the day.
