If you\u2019re an online business owner I\u2019m guessing you know exactly what I\u2019m talking about. It goes like this:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have an idea \u2013 you\u2019re good at something and you want to monetize it. You get brave and start a business. Go you!&nbsp; You\u2019re excited, but also inexperienced so you start listening to podcasts for inspiration. And that\u2019s when you find it \u2013 The golden evangelist. You binge several episodes, which leads you to their blog, where you download a free resource. You try to implement the mini-training (but it\u2019s wildly incomplete). So you try your best, but it just doesn\u2019t work. You panic because it seems like everyone is making six figures with this three-step plan. Maybe you\u2019re the reason you\u2019re a failure?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, no. You\u2019re not a failure \u2013 you\u2019re resilient! You find a new podcast, with a different freebie, and a new promise of $10k months, etc. Nodding your head? Feeling anxious and sweaty from reading that? Here\u2019s the good news: It doesn\u2019t have to be this way!&nbsp; In this article, we\u2019ll dive into 10 essential email marketing metrics that every independent business owner should be monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These metrics will give you valuable insights into the success of your email campaigns. I\u2019m an extrovert and a natural connector, so networking and meeting new clients has always been my favorite part of growing my online marketing business. I just didn\u2019t realize, until recently, that I\u2019m the minority in this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was chatting with a friend (who also happens to be a mentor for design freelancers) and she asked how I was growing my marketing business so quickly. When I told her my leads were almost 100% from cold emails (messages sent to strangers) she couldn\u2019t believe it. She said finding clients is the <strong>number one struggle <\/strong>she hears about from her students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This genuinely surprised me, so I started asking <em>my<\/em> clients about it. Sure enough, most of them were feeling stuck. I\u2019ve found that many independent service providers have negative feelings about the word \u201cmarketing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means it\u2019s time for marketing 101. What <em>is <\/em>marketing? <strong>Marketing is simply the act of promoting and selling products or services. <\/strong>That means if you have a business and you need more clients, you need to work on marketing outreach when it comes to your services. Marketing outreach doesn\u2019t have to be intimidating or overwhelming though. The \u201cact of promoting or selling\u201d can be anything from a social media post to a massive corporate campaign, or it can be a personalized email inviting someone to work with you and sharing how your services could make their life a little easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outreach marketing is an action-based marketing strategy. Websites and social media are important, but they are passive tools. When independents spend their budgets and energy on a passive strategy it can take much longer to get a steady flow of income. Just because people are interested in your content doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re qualified prospective clients. Outreach marketing gives you the opportunity to intentionally connect with (and serve) your target audience\u2014prospective clients that are qualified\u2014on an individual basis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a id=\"common-marketing\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common marketing struggles for small business owners and entrepreneurs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Does any of this sound familiar?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You\u2019re sick of the social media cycle, or you just don\u2019t have time to build a solid content strategy and wait for it to gain momentum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You dream of being fully booked, or expanding your agency, but you can\u2019t quite crack the code on bringing in new clients consistently.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have a marketing budget of $0.00 and you need clients ASAP.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019re a creative freelancer or service provider who knows you could use your skills to make a consistent income\u2026 but no one is finding your awesome website!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019re exhausted by reels and TikToks and whatever other new trends keep popping up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If this sounds like you, don\u2019t stress. You\u2019re not alone! But, it\u2019s time to stop hiding behind a passive social media strategy. It\u2019s time to take action with outreach marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Set a very clear (and time-sensitive) goal&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When thinking about your goals, remember that the best goals are specific, measurable, and achievable. Use this formula: <strong>I will [insert action] by [specific date]<\/strong>. Here\u2019s an example: I will send 5 emails to business owners I know by March 1st. Notice how the goal is something you can control\u2026 you don\u2019t know if they will say yes, but you still accomplished your goal of reaching out!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make a big list of dream clients. Be sure to include:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People you would absolutely love to work with. Don\u2019t limit yourself here. Even if it seems lofty, write down their name! You can always edit your list later, but don\u2019t limit yourself.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Family, friends, and other personal connections who could be a good fit.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Past clients who may need more of your service. (Previous clients and coworkers make great referrals.)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<a id=\"conversion\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Outreach marketing for entrepreneurs and freelancers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Passive social media marketing means posting organically on your accounts and <em>waiting<\/em> for clients to find your post, visit your profile, and click on the link to your contact form, then inquire about your services. Can this work? Of course. But is it a reliable way to book new clients on a regular basis? Not at all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your goal is to create a steady income each month to support yourself and your family, you need to book new clients with an <em>actionable<\/em> strategy. Direct outreach marketing is all about taking action instead of waiting around (which puts the burden on the client).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is my simple plan and number one marketing strategy for independent business owners who need to book clients quickly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Set a very clear (and time-sensitive) goal&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When thinking about your goals, remember that the best goals are specific, measurable, and achievable. The key to this strategy is to focus on making connections, not just sales. Don\u2019t start reaching out to your contacts until you\u2019ve taken the time to get to know more about them. Browse their website and social media channels (and notice how they interact with others). What do you genuinely love about the ways they present themselves and their business? Take note of these things and don\u2019t be afraid to pay them a compliment. We all love to hear what we\u2019re doing well!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use your outreach marketing skills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally email each person on your list. I know this feels sketchy, but stick with me! Remember that the worst thing that can possibly happen is\u2026&nbsp; they say no. That\u2019s it. All you can do is offer your services and let them decide if it\u2019s a good fit. (Look at you! You\u2019re <strong>promoting and selling your products or services. <\/strong>The definition of marketing, remember?<strong>)<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if you\u2019re nervous about exactly what to say? That\u2019s fair. I have a lot of practice with this, so I created a set of email templates that solve that exact problem. Just remember to keep it personal. Templates are a great starting point, but they only work if you personalize them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I personally doubled my monthly revenue in one summer using my<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashleygreeno.com\/bookingmagic\"> Booking Magic email templates<\/a>. I had long-term social media strategies in place, but I needed to bump up my client base, so I went with what I knew: direct emails. I started reaching out to strangers, creating connections, and inviting them to book my services. That\u2019s how I was able to double my monthly revenue in just 30 days!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An important factor that many fail to realize is part of the process: don\u2019t stop. Repeat the process until your roster is full and your clients are thanking you for reaching out because they \u201cknew they needed help but they were too busy to go out and find anyone\u201d. That\u2019s based on a true story, by the way! Several clients were drowning in marketing tasks and later told me that my email was like a lifeboat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outreach marketing doesn\u2019t have to be spammy or weird. It\u2019s a service when done well. Once you figure out the process your future clients will feel like you\u2019re a mind reader. You\u2019ll pop up in their inbox with exactly the service they need, and they\u2019ll be thrilled to work with you. Now go out there and find your dream clients!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a id=\"next-steps\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Next steps for scaling&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you get the hang of direct outreach marketing, it can be a serious game changer! The catch? It\u2019s only scalable to a point. This is where passive marketing comes in handy. Once you have a solid base of dream clients, you can start building a lead-generation strategy on social media and your website (or even better, an SEO-based platform like Pinterest). This will help you attract more clients without having to reach out to them individually.
